Colbert’s Dreams race escalation and the state of American television

Yesterday, Stephen Colbert featured a segment in which he escalated the ensuing dreams race with North Korea. I want to share it less because of its political acuity and more for what it tells us about the state of American television. Which is just terrific. On cable television, right now, a creative type with a successful show, like Colbert, can do just about whatever he wants (barring of course, the obvious taboos). It must be a pleasure to work in such an environment, where the reigns are truly off.  Most of what this produces is terrible, frankly, but it’s still to be celebrated as a space to run free. And if you ever doubt the artist’s ability to indulge, just watch this clip.

Because, man, This. Is. Crazy.
