The History Channel has a smash success television program currently running called “The Bible.” I have never seen it, though it’s not hard to guess its subject. According to this trailer it looks dramatic and flashy in a History Channel sort of way–which is to say, kind of cheap but just good enough to watch if it’s on at the cabin and you can’t find the clicker.
Anyway. In the manner of adorable US Political/Cultural chatter (which I love and partake in), critics have pointed out that the actor cast as Satan in this show looks a bit like our sitting US President. Again, I think this is not a story. What is awesome is the kerfuffle over casting an actor to play Satan who slightly resembles President Obama resulted in Executive Producer Mark Burnett issuing this statement:
“The actor who played Satan, Mehdi Ouzaani, is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor. He has previously played parts in several Biblical epics — including Satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our President.”
There is something very funny about that defense. That he has played Satanic characters previously discounts his likeness to Obama. I don’t know. It’s just funny and totally unnecessary. It’s amazing what kind of public statements are issued these days. Then again, it’s amazing that something called The History Channel has a show on Ancient Aliens, or UFO Hunters, or all the reality show garbage that somehow landed on that channel. Because, you know, History!
Even casting calls for Satan on a mediocre cable channel are now dragged into the muck of American Politics and media.
For the curious, here is “The Bible”‘s Satan, and our president, who is not Satan.
