Huckabee makes the Nazi Comparison.

I remember a tweet, I think from the author John Green, that included a list of people who could viably be compared to Adolf Hitler. It went like this:

1) Hitler.
End of List.

I think that’s about right. If we could get our talking heads to heed this advice, the world would be a better place. Alas, we’re not there.

Former evangelical pastor and Governor and Presidential Candidate, and current talk-show host, Mike Huckabee thinks that the Obama Administration’s advocacy for stricter gun policies bears comparison to Hitler’s Germany. The thinking, apparently, is that since Hitler’s government restricted gun-ownership, and Obama’s policies seek to restrict gun-ownership, there is then a correlative relationship between Obama and Hitler.  Thinking like this makes for good radio, I suppose, which is where Huckabee continued:

When you bring that up you get people who get crazy on us,” he said. “And they’ll start saying, ‘Oh there you go comparing to the Nazis.’ And I understand the reaction, but it’s the truth.”

“In every society and culture where dictators take over, one of the things they have to do is get control of the military and the police and ultimately all of the citizens and make sure the citizens are disarmed and can’t fight in the streets,” he said. “Gosh, I hope it doesn’t come to that.”

Gosh, Mike, I hope so too.

Presumably Mike Huckabee is performing for his audience here and not demonstrating his actual capacity for mental rigor. Because this kind of thinking belongs in the trash-heap of intellectual garbage. It doesn’t matter what I say of course, Huckabee is a national figure and has an established audience. I assume he cares little for my rebuke. But I feel better when I write about these things.

So I’d like to say to Mike Huckabee and everyone else: if you want to compare Obama to Hitler, then you’ll have to work a little harder than this. Better yet would be to leave off any comparison at all of any American Politician to Hitler. It makes you look stupid. Because it is a stupid thing to do. Beyond that, it is insulting to history, and President Obama, and our country.

And, it’s just incorrect. National gun policies that are restrictive do not by necessity lead to dictatorships and police states  leading us down the path of a Hitler-like government. Sometimes they lead to contemporary England, or modern Japan, or (gasp) Canada. Or any number of nations with stricter gun laws than we currently have in the US. Those nations may not be models of Mike Huckabee’s ideal America, but they are far cries from Hitler’s Germany.

Frankly, I doubt there is a strong causal relationship between gun-policy and a government like Nazi Germany. I could be wrong. But I would bet that there is a much stronger relationship between the presence of a dictator and the creation of a Dictatorship

So, Mike Huckabee, if you think Obama is a dictator capable of re-making the United States under his iron willed fist into a police-state in which he will ban guns through restrictive policies, requiring citizens to rise up in revolution and defend our democracy, just say it.  But, gosh, I really hope you don’t come to that.
